Cabrini Health’s origins trace back to January 24, 1948, when ten Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus arrived in Melbourne from Italy. Invited by Archbishop Daniel Mannix, they took over St Benedict’s, a small hospital in Malvern. Despite initial challenges, the Sisters’ dedication led to the establishment of a functional hospital, laying the foundation for what would become one of Victoria’s largest Catholic healthcare services.
The organization is owned and operated by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Catholic religious institute founded in 1880 by St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Guided by values of compassion, integrity, courage and respect, Cabrini Health has expanded its services over the decades. Notable milestones include the official opening of the St Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital in Malvern on May 11, 1958, which was then the largest private hospital in Victoria with a capacity of 140 beds.
The hospital quickly doubled in size by 1961.Today, Cabrini Health encompasses multiple facilities, including Cabrini Malvern, Cabrini Brighton and specialist centers in Hawthorn East and Elsternwick.
The organization employs over 4,300 staff and collaborates with more than 1,200 visiting medical officers. Cabrini Health continues to honor the legacy of its founders by providing high-quality, compassionate care to the community, integrating clinical research, innovative models of care and state-of-the-art technology to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients
